Many years ago when I was a wee lass in college, I remember studying the “Galloping Gertie” the name affectionately given to the bridge that used to span the Tacoma Narrows between Gig Harbor and Tacoma Washington. We all love the beautiful changing colors fall brings. Unfortunately the leaves aren’t the only thing that start changing in October. As the season cools and leads us inevitably to winter, many people will begin to experience some “changing colors” of their own.  According to Dr. Jeffrey Rossman, 10% of people in Northern states suffer from full blown Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) while another 30%  ”sub-syndromal SAD”, or a low-grade version of seasonal depression.

SAD is a type of depression that occurs during a change in season, usually fall and winter. SAD sufferers share many of the symptoms those with depression do. These can include a lack of energy, feelings of hopelessness, changes in appetite and weight gain, among other symptoms.

Losing weight while you warm up and soak in full spectrum light…we bet that’ll have you smiling.

If you have tried losing weight on your own without success, you are not alone. In fact, research shows that you are the norm. A recent study followed over 9,000 adults who enrolled themselves in a popular chain of weight-loss and exercise centers in Sweden. Over a year, program clients lost an average of 11 to 25 pounds, depending on how strict they were willing to get with calories.

This study confirms earler findings which followed participants in a few different commercial programs, namely that: people in these programs lose more weight over an extended period than people assigned to “usual care” – a term generally used to refer to advice from a doctor or dietitian.

Erik Hemminsson, the researcher who led the study in Sweden, attributes the success of these programs to the support dieters receive, a facet which he deemed “absolutely critial”.

The full study can be viewed in the September issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

It amazes me sometimes how often it seems to occur that when I read some of the latest studies into weight loss, philosophies Slimxpress has been touting for years are consistently proven to be accurate. The latest is a study into exercise’s role in weight loss, and particularly why it seems that the more we exercise, the less we lose. 

Researches at The Univeristy of Copenhagen dug into this problem in a recent study. The New York Times reports that the researches gathered a group of overweight, sedentary young men (in their 20s and early 30s). From this group they divided them into three groups:

The first group was a control and were told not to alter their diet or activity habits.

The second group was told to keep the same diet but to do moderate workouts daily, the goal being to burn on average 300 calories.

A third group was instructed to perform more rigorous workouts daily, burning 600 calories. 

All groups kept detailed daily food journals. The results were surprising to none of us who have tried to burn fat with intense workouts:

At the end of the 13 weeks, the members of the control group weighed the same as they had at the start, and their body fat percentages were unchanged, which is hardly surprising.

On the other hand, the men who had exercised the most, working out for 60 minutes a day, had managed to drop some flab, losing an average of five pounds each. The scientists calculated that that weight loss, while by no means negligible, was still about 20 percent less than would have been expected given the number of calories the men were expending each day during exercise, if food intake and other aspects of their life had held steady.

Meanwhile, the volunteers who’d worked out for only 30 minutes a day did considerably better, shedding about seven pounds each, a total that, given the smaller number of calories that they were burning during exercise, represents a hefty 83 percent “bonus” beyond what would have been expected, says Mads Rosenkilde, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Copenhagen who led the study.

There’s been a lot of interest in weight loss circles in green coffee bean extract. Recently, Dr. Oz dedicated a segment to testing the effectiveness of this extract in losing weight. A study in January, 2012 of 16 adults had shown an average of 18 lbs over 12 weeks. Dr. Oz’s team decided to follow up on the research and conduct their own studies. Here were their findings:

The show’s Medical Unit enlisted 100 women between the ages of 35 and 49 who were overweight with BMIs between 25 and 45. The women were not pregnant or breastfeeding and didn’t have any major medical problems including diabetes, or history of heart attack or stroke. These women received either the green coffee bean extract or a placebo, and were instructed to take 400mg capsules, three times a day – 30 minutes before each meal. No participant knew which pill they were given. Furthermore, the participants were instructed to not change their diet, and to keep a food journal that would help The Dr. Oz Show learn what these women were eating. After two weeks, the study participants were weighed.  

In two weeks, the group of women who took the green coffee bean extract lost, on average, two pounds. However, the group of women who took the placebo lost an average of one pound – possibly because they were more aware of their diet for that two weeks because of the required food journal.

The show further warned against phony, ineffective products and stated that children should not take green coffee extract, as no studies have been performed yet which would show effects on children.

We all want our children to be healthy, and most parents understand the affect a good diet can have on their child’s health, not to mention self-image. But recent studies show another reason why getting yourself in shape and passing along those good eating habits to your kids is beneficial: you might just kick up their IQ a few points!

According to a recent study from the University of Adelaide, children that are fed healthy diets at an early age may end up with a higher IQ. Conversely, children fed diets  heavier in junk food could end up with a slightly reduced IQ.

The study observed the link between the eating habits of children at six months, 15 months and two years, and their IQ after their eighth birthday. According to Dr. Lisa Smithers, head of the study:

“We found that children who were breastfed at six months and had a healthy diet regularly including foods such as legumes, cheese, fruit and vegetables at 15 and 24 months, had an IQ up to two points higher by age eight.

“Those children who had a diet regularly involving biscuits, chocolate, sweets, soft drinks and chips in the first two years of life had IQs up to two points lower by age eight.”

Of course, one of the most important things parents can do for their children is to set a good example to follow. By eating healthy yourself, you’ll make it easier to set good patterns for your kids.
