Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Lipotropics

83202_7793Can lipotropic injections really help you lose weight?

Here in sunny Los Angeles being skinny is the norm. Or at least the perceived norm, with all those skeletal models and actresses prancing about Los Angeles, it’s enough to make a “pleasantly plump” person feel downright awkward. Heck, in our Slimxpress Santa Monica Boulevard clinic, even the actresses and models are convinced they aren’t quite skinny enough. If you are feeling the pressure to be skinnier, and want to keep it healthy and natural, you may want to consider lipotropic injections.

What are lipotropic injections? What do they do?

Lipotropic injections are a mixture of vitamins, amino acids, and other natural nutrients which help the body to burn fat more efficiently and keep it from storing in the liver. They help to detoxify the body, which is very important during weight loss, as most toxins are stored in fat and released when fat is burned up during weight loss, thus re-exposing the body to the dangers of those chemicals.

The B-vitamins in our Slimxpress signature lipotropic blend, the “Buckshot” are also very helpful for fatigue and stress.

Who can benefit from lipotropic injections?

Anyone who has reached a weight loss plateau, wants more energy, or wants detoxification support.

Lipotropics can be used in conjunction with the HCG weight loss program. Lipotropic injections can also be used by those who are too lean to do HCG as a way to help lose those last 10 pounds, and slim down to a perfect Los Angeles style “aesthetic ideal.”

What kind of results can I expect?

By adding lipotropics to your sensible weight loss regime, you could lose up to an additional pound per week. Many patients report feeling improved energy on the lipotropics. Lipotropics are also a great way to break a weight loss “plateau.”

Are lipotropics safe?

Lipotropics are safe and well tolerated by most. We offer lipotropic injections under the supervision of our staff doctors in our Los Angeles, Glendale, and Anaheim, to ensure your safety.

Are lipotropic injections affordable?

We offer several cost-effective options for lipotropics for our Anaheim, Glendale, and Los Angeles patients. (insert specials info if desired)

Colonics: A Bridge To Better Health?

Do you have issues with constipation, gas, bloating, or poor diet? Would you like a chance to help your body rid itself more effectively of toxins? Are you dieting and reaching a weight loss plateau?

Tacoma-narrows-bridge-collapse

Many years ago when I was a wee lass in college, I remember studying the “Galloping Gertie” the name affectionately given to the bridge that used to span the Tacoma Narrows between Gig Harbor and Tacoma Washington. Colonics can be thought of as an effective “bridge” for your health, helping to increase the rate of detoxification and elimination, and thereby increasing the effectiveness of your weight loss or overall health goals.

Sometimes, our bridges get destroyed. The colon is the main passageway, or bridge, for the removal of toxins from the body. What destroys the colon’s ability to do this? The veritable storm of modern life and modern diet. Colonics are a tremendously useful tool to repair the damage done by the poisons we willingly and unwillingly ingest on a regular basis. Galloping Gertie was built back in the early part of the 1900’s, when Tacoma was a rough and tumble port town. She was caught on film during a particularly bad storm that caused her to “gallop” so much that she was completely destroyed, ending Tacoma’s overland connection to the Olympic Peninsula. Little did I know when I watched that film in college, that I would soon be moving to the Tacoma area from North Carolina, and crossing the replacement bridge everyday!

The way colonics work is by gently and rapidly removing waste products from the large intestine, so that toxic bile which is dumped into the large intestine by the liver, is not reabsorbed.

When you diet, fat stores are liberated and burned, releasing long-stored toxins. The nastiest toxins tend to be stored in fat, which can be very damaging to the brain, blood, mood, and sense of well being, as well as potentially cancer promoting. It’s important to detoxify the body during and after dieting for this reason. Colonics are a great way to help achieve this goal.

I returned to the Tacoma area many years later as a new doc, to administer…guess what? Colonics. Ok, so I admit it, finances were a little tight…but never-the-less, I was convinced of the effectiveness of colonics for many health issues, and so felt encouraged to offer this service to patients.

I have since moved from the Tacoma area to sunnier climes, but luckily for you, there are well qualified colonic specialists available at our Tacoma clinics who would love to gently and effectively assist you in your health, well-being, detoxification, and weight loss goals.

Be well and go lightly,

Dr Penney

Weight-less In Seattle

pike-placeOh dear, another gloomy Seattle day! If you are like many Seattle natives, the thought of  yet another grey wet morning to start your exercise and weight loss program is just too much to motivate for. Getting to the gym in Seattle traffic is also not always easy, but how are you going to achieve your New Year’s Resolution to lose those extra pounds?

Have you tried many different weight loss programs only to end up frustrated and hungry? Help is on the way. With Slimxpress Medical Weight Loss Centers, conveniently located in Seattle, Downtown Seattle, and Tacoma, we have the answers you are looking for to achieve your weight loss goals. If you need quick, safe, and effective weight loss, without strict exercise regimes or severe calorie restriction, we can get you there.

The secret is the HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). HCG works by tricking your brain into doing three important things. This natural hormone, found in the bodies of pregnant women, works equally well for men and women when it comes to weight loss. When a woman is pregnant, the growing embryo needs a constant supply of energy, whether the mother is eating or not. HCG works by telling her brain to liberate her fat stores so they can be used as an energy source. In a non-pregnant person, HCG has the same effect: it liberates fat stores so they can be used as an energy source. It does two other amazing things as well…

Normally in the human body, when you restrict calories, the body goes into a kind of starvation mode and the metabolism slows down so you dont potentially starve to death. This was great when we were living in caves and food was scarce, but with Seattle Pikes Place Market open 7 days per week…starvation is unlikely. For someone trying to achieve weight loss, this is problematic because as soon as they go back to eating normally the weight piles back on and then some… because the metabolism has become so efficient! HCG bypasses this problem by inhibiting the mechanism which slows the metabolism in the face of calorie restriction.

The other really cool thing that HCG does is suppress the appetite. Yes, even in dark, grey, “where is my double mocha latte and bagel” Seattle. Why? The theory is that because the fat stores are liberated, hunger decreases because there is plenty of fuel around. And when you aren’t hungry, weight loss is a whole lot easier!

The HCG diet is a safe and effective weight loss tool for many people. Give us a call today to schedule your free consultation at any of our convenient locations in the Seattle area: 206-547-9429

Be well and go lightly,

Dr Penney (former Seattle -ite, currently in sunny So-Cal :)

What Does Dr. Oz Think Of The hCG Diet?

Doc-oz-logo

In a recent episode of the Dr. Oz Show, everyone’s favorite TV doctor discussed for the third time the always popular and controversial hCG Diet. Some takeaways from the show:
  • hCG helps to mobilize fat. Normal very low calorie diets (VLCD) tend to cause the dieter to lose muscle, which makes the weight loss harder to maintain
  • Low dosages of hCG are not as effective for preserving muscle as high dosages
  • There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach. Different bodies need different caloric needs
  • Exercise is still an important facet for weight loss

Lighten Up This Fall and Winter

Dreamstime_xs_2069392
We all love the beautiful changing colors fall brings. Unfortunately the leaves aren’t the only thing that start changing in October. As the season cools and leads us inevitably to winter, many people will begin to experience some “changing colors” of their own.  According to Dr. Jeffrey Rossman, 10% of people in Northern states suffer from full blown Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) while another 30%  ”sub-syndromal SAD”, or a low-grade version of seasonal depression.

SAD is a type of depression that occurs during a change in season, usually fall and winter. SAD sufferers share many of the symptoms those with depression do. These can include a lack of energy, feelings of hopelessness, changes in appetite and weight gain, among other symptoms.

If you’re one of the 40% who feels bummed out by colder weather and shorter days, light therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for what ails you. Dr. Rossman recommends getting outside for a walk in the sunshine, but when that isn’t possible, we have the next best thing (and something you’ll probably enjoy even more): SlimXpress now offers full-spectrum light therapy treatment.

Light therapy uses a full spectrum, intense light to help decrease depressive symptoms. The treatment takes place inside our infrared sauna, which means you get not only those glorious rays to lift your spirits, but you also warm your bones In fact, our favorite TV doctor, Dr. Oz, says:

the high temperature [from an infrared sauna] helps lower blood pressure and increase blood circulation. It gets your heart to beat faster, and it burns calories. It raises your metabolism a little bit, and also when you sweat, you sweat out toxins through the skin.

Losing weight while you warm up and soak in full spectrum light…we bet that’ll have you smiling.

Support In Commercial Weight Loss Programs Makes Them More Successful

840316_15639436
If you have tried losing weight on your own without success, you are not alone. In fact, research shows that you are the norm. A recent study followed over 9,000 adults who enrolled themselves in a popular chain of weight-loss and exercise centers in Sweden. Over a year, program clients lost an average of 11 to 25 pounds, depending on how strict they were willing to get with calories.

This study confirms earler findings which followed participants in a few different commercial programs, namely that: people in these programs lose more weight over an extended period than people assigned to “usual care” – a term generally used to refer to advice from a doctor or dietitian.

Erik Hemminsson, the researcher who led the study in Sweden, attributes the success of these programs to the support dieters receive, a facet which he deemed “absolutely critial”.

The full study can be viewed in the September issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Why Less Exercise May Drop More Pounds

Dreamstime_xs_20946980

It amazes me sometimes how often it seems to occur that when I read some of the latest studies into weight loss, philosophies Slimxpress has been touting for years are consistently proven to be accurate. The latest is a study into exercise’s role in weight loss, and particularly why it seems that the more we exercise, the less we lose.

Researches at The Univeristy of Copenhagen dug into this problem in a recent study. The New York Times reports that the researches gathered a group of overweight, sedentary young men (in their 20s and early 30s). From this group they divided them into three groups:

The first group was a control and were told not to alter their diet or activity habits.

The second group was told to keep the same diet but to do moderate workouts daily, the goal being to burn on average 300 calories.

A third group was instructed to perform more rigorous workouts daily, burning 600 calories.

All groups kept detailed daily food journals. The results were surprising to none of us who have tried to burn fat with intense workouts:

At the end of the 13 weeks, the members of the control group weighed the same as they had at the start, and their body fat percentages were unchanged, which is hardly surprising.

On the other hand, the men who had exercised the most, working out for 60 minutes a day, had managed to drop some flab, losing an average of five pounds each. The scientists calculated that that weight loss, while by no means negligible, was still about 20 percent less than would have been expected given the number of calories the men were expending each day during exercise, if food intake and other aspects of their life had held steady.

Meanwhile, the volunteers who’d worked out for only 30 minutes a day did considerably better, shedding about seven pounds each, a total that, given the smaller number of calories that they were burning during exercise, represents a hefty 83 percent “bonus” beyond what would have been expected, says Mads Rosenkilde, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Copenhagen who led the study.

Dr. Oz’s “Green Coffee Bean Project”

Green_coffee_bean_extract_lean_image

There’s been a lot of interest in weight loss circles in green coffee bean extract. Recently, Dr. Oz dedicated a segment to testing the effectiveness of this extract in losing weight. A study in January, 2012 of 16 adults had shown an average of 18 lbs over 12 weeks. Dr. Oz’s team decided to follow up on the research and conduct their own studies. Here were their findings:

The show’s Medical Unit enlisted 100 women between the ages of 35 and 49 who were overweight with BMIs between 25 and 45. The women were not pregnant or breastfeeding and didn’t have any major medical problems including diabetes, or history of heart attack or stroke. These women received either the green coffee bean extract or a placebo, and were instructed to take 400mg capsules, three times a day – 30 minutes before each meal. No participant knew which pill they were given. Furthermore, the participants were instructed to not change their diet, and to keep a food journal that would help The Dr. Oz Show learn what these women were eating. After two weeks, the study participants were weighed.

In two weeks, the group of women who took the green coffee bean extract lost, on average, two pounds. However, the group of women who took the placebo lost an average of one pound – possibly because they were more aware of their diet for that two weeks because of the required food journal.

The show further warned against phony, ineffective products and stated that children should not take green coffee extract, as no studies have been performed yet which would show effects on children.

You can try out green coffee extract yourself at our Slimxpress Store.

Feeding Your Kids Right Can Make Them Smarter

Dreamstime_s_24063121

We all want our children to be healthy, and most parents understand the affect a good diet can have on their child’s health, not to mention self-image. But recent studies show another reason why getting yourself in shape and passing along those good eating habits to your kids is beneficial: you might just kick up their IQ a few points!

According to a recent study from the University of Adelaide, children that are fed healthy diets at an early age may end up with a higher IQ. Conversely, children fed diets  heavier in junk food could end up with a slightly reduced IQ.

The study observed the link between the eating habits of children at six months, 15 months and two years, and their IQ after their eighth birthday. According to Dr. Lisa Smithers, head of the study:

“We found that children who were breastfed at six months and had a healthy diet regularly including foods such as legumes, cheese, fruit and vegetables at 15 and 24 months, had an IQ up to two points higher by age eight.

“Those children who had a diet regularly involving biscuits, chocolate, sweets, soft drinks and chips in the first two years of life had IQs up to two points lower by age eight.”

Of course, one of the most important things parents can do for their children is to set a good example to follow. By eating healthy yourself, you’ll make it easier to set good patterns for your kids.

Tell us some of your kid’s favorite healthy dishes in the comments!
